When architect John Parkinson was commissioned to design the Alexandria Hotel in downtown Los Angeles it was considered to be the finest hotel in the western United States and was hugely successful. But within a couple of decades it had been eclipsed by much grander places and fell into decline. Despite that, the building still stands, and continues to operate as a hotel with shops on the ground floor, a testament to the architect's durable design.
