When the owner of Bullock's Department Store hired John Parkinson to design their new location on Wilshire Blvd one of his chief concerns was that the building be visible from a distance. Bullock's Wilshire was going to be the first major department store located outside of downtown Los Angeles and he wanted to be sure it could be easily seen. The company's competitors scoffed at the thought of leaving downtown, predicting that the store would be a very expensive failure. But both the store and Parkinson's design proved to be a huge success, attracting movie stars and the city's wealthiest patrons.
