At the time Engine House No 18 was designed by architect John Parkinson in 1904 I'm sure it was considered the very model of a modern fire station. However, by the late 1970s it had become obsolete and was shut down. The building stood vacant for many years, with various city agencies wrangling over what to do with it, when finally it was restored and repurposed as the South LA Arts Center. As an historic architectural site the exterior remains as it has always been.
