Googie architecture took off at the end of World War II with the building of Googie's Coffee Shop, designed by architect John Lautner in what is now West Hollywood.  The style was characterized by sweeping rooflines and decorations featuring irregular shapes.  The sign in front of this otherwise nondescript motel, no doubt put up to attract the attention of weary travelers, is still recognizable as vintage Googie despite its neon lettering having been removed a long time ago.
