Sound Stages, Warner Brothers Studios, Burbank

At the time I made this image in 1983, these nine sound stages framing the view toward Mt Hollywood represented one of the most densely packed clusters of movie making facilities anywhere in the world. And they were only a portion of Warner Brothers' full compliment of stages. At times, the studio's output of feature films was extraordinary, especially in the 1930s and 40s, during which all of these buildings were in constant use. But since then, during periods when shooting on location was preferred over the unreal environment of a stage for instance, there have been long periods when many would sit idle. There is still no place quite like a film studio.
