Terra Cotta Wall, Whittier Blvd, East Los Angeles
I find myself at times brought up short by something that has utilized an unusual building material or used a familiar material in an unusual way. This terra cotta breeze block wall along Whittier Blvd in East LA, famous for its lowrider cruising, is a striking example. It’s difficult to say whether the distinctive uneven coloration was applied to neutralize graffiti or for some other, perhaps creative reason. The bright magenta window in the building across the street is of course the choice of the building’s retail tenant.
